Elliott Laboratories Announces Opening of New Test Laboratory

February 16, 2010 Fremont, CA – In an important expansion to its testing and certification capabilities, Elliott Laboratories, an NTS company announced the opening of a new custom-built Climatic, Environmental and Dynamics Product Testing Laboratory in close proximity to the company’s existing test laboratories in Silicon Valley, California. The new location is over 30,000 square feet and will house a wide range of state-of-the-art testing equipment.

In addition to the EMC, product safety and wireless testing services already being performed in the existing Silicon Valley locations, the new location will offer a wide range of complementary services such as shock and vibration testing, thermal stress and extreme environment simulation. These new services open the door to customers in many different industries, ranging from Aerospace and Defense to Telecom and Medical. “This expansion effort represents a major expansion of our test offerings in Northern California, by bringing in all of the complementary testing capabilities needed to fully round out our existing portfolio of services”, said Eddie Pavlu, General Manager of Elliott Laboratories/NTS Silicon Valley. “Our customers now have true one-stop shopping for all of their product testing and certification requirements right here in the Bay Area.”

These new capabilities make Elliott Laboratories a viable local solution for many Bay Area manufacturers who have had to take their testing requirements to laboratories outside of the region to meet their full range of needs. Additionally, the new capabilities will enable Elliott Laboratories to offer a more complete NEBS testing solution for the many telecom equipment manufacturers in the area.

Article and Panel Discussion on ANSI C63.10

The ANSI C63.10, a standard for Testing Unlicensed Wireless Devices by the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) and Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) C63® was published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) on September 10, 2009. This new standard has in one document, procedures for testing many unlicensed wireless devices for compliance with the Rules and Regulations of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Previously this information and testing procedures were scattered in various FCC rules, the FCC Knowledge database, ANSI C63.4 and various other FCC and IC publications.  The FCC accepted the use of this new standard on November 25, 2009 (refer to FCC DA No. 09-2478) as an alternative to ANSI C63.4:2003.

The standard includes procedures for testing wireless devices such as frequency hopping and direct sequence spread spectrum cordless telephones, medical unlicensed wireless devices and unlicensed wireless devices operating on frequencies below 30 MHz and automatic vehicle identification systems.

Interference Technology recently invited a panel of experts, who were also part of the working group on the standard, to weigh in on the implications and the effects of the standard on testing and day to day lab operations. This group and panel included Mark Briggs, Principal Engineer at Elliott Labs, an NTS Company.

Medical Device Manufacturer charged in Failure to report Safety Problems to FDA

A medical device manufacturer was recently charged in relation to safety recall problems with some of its implantable defibrillators back in 2005.

According to the information filed, the manufacturer concealed information from the FDA regarding catastrophic failures in some of its lifesaving devices. The charges were filed following a four-year investigation into their handling of short-circuiting failures of three models of its defibrillators.
