Eco-Design: New Condition for CE Mark
A recent Directive will bring the concept of ecologically
sensitive design into the heart of the product marketplace. This new
Directive will have far-reaching effects, although they will not be
felt immediately because a number of additional implementing
regulations will need to be passed, both by the Commission and the
Member States of the European Union. Directive 2005/32/EC of 6 July
2005 establishes "a framework for the setting of ecodesign
requirements for energy-using products," which gives it a very broad
scope. The Directive sets up a framework under which many products
will have to be designed with consideration of environmental aspects
over their entire life cycle. Energy efficiency is one factor; also
included in ecodesign will be the effects of manufacturing and
disposal on energy used, pollution created, and hazardous substances
employed.
