DOC Releases RFID Report
If you need a cram course on the burgeoning world of RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification), a recent paper by the United States Department of Commerce may be of use. RFID is going to have a huge impact, but the areas it will affect are not yet fully defined. The first impact is clearly going to come in marketing, where Wal-Mart has already required its top suppliers to move to RFID tagging of merchandise, and other major retailers have indicated they will soon follow. The RFID tag's code is likely to become as ubiquitous as the UPC bar code is already. But, more dramatic applications may follow. One prediction is that in ten years you may be able to walk a shopping cart by the checkout station without ever unloading it, because of the low cost remote interrogation capability RFID tags will soon provide!

The Department of Commerce paper examines the present and future implications of RFID from a technical, regulatory, and economic viewpoint. Among the issues addressed are:

  • Growth and size of the RFID market

  • Technology types (such as active, passive, and frequency range) and applications

  • Present and speculative future uses

  • Main standards organizations

  • International frequencies of usage and harmonization initiatives

  • Government and commercial uses

  • Security and Privacy issues

If you've been meaning to catch up on this important area of electronic business, this is a good place to start.
